Description
Smithy Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and rebuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone, with the upper part of the right side rebuilt in brick. The roof is thatched, with a 20th-century brick end stack on the right and a brick internal stack to the rear. The plan is based on two units. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with a two-window front. A single-storey flat-roof projecting wing is on the right, formerly an outshut with a low catslide roof, which was raised in the mid-20th century. The front has a casement window with a concrete lintel. The entrance is in the left return side, with an old single panel, two-plank door and a thatched catslide hood. There are casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and painted wood lintels throughout. Swept dormers are visible. Inside, the kitchen has a broad-chamfered beam, and the stone open fireplace has a plain bressumer. There are three-plank doors with wooden latches and strap hinges throughout. A room to the left contains a built-in cupboard with two fine early/mid-17th-century carved and moulded doors. There is also a winder staircase and a left-end extension with a corrugated roof.
