Description
Pear Tree Cottage and Beech Cottage are a pair of cottages, likely originally four dwellings, dating from the mid to late 18th century. Pear Tree Cottage’s left-hand range was altered in the early 19th century, while Beech Cottage on the right has undergone late 20th-century modifications. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared ironstone rubble. The tile roof has a gable parapet on the left; the lower range has a slate roof, and brick end and ridge stacks are present. The main range is a 4-unit plan, with a 2-unit lower range adjacent. The cottages are two storeys high, with a 5-window front. Pear Tree Cottage's left range features 20th-century garage doors and a half-glazed door on the right, alongside a central window. The main range has a plank door, a 3-light window with glazing bars, and a blocked doorway and a 2-light window on the right, both with stone flat arches. The window openings are irregularly spaced, featuring 2- and 3-light casements with varied glazing bars and leaded lights. Painted wood lintels are also present. Beech Cottage has a late 20th-century door within a recessed porch; a late 20th-century window above has a concrete lintel. The rest of Beech Cottage is obscured by an adjoining house, which is not part of the listed property. Interior features include exposed ceiling beams. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
