Description
Oriel Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid-18th century, with a front wing added in the late 19th or early 20th century and some alterations. It is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone and features a thatched roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The building has a two-unit layout extended to an L-plan and consists of one storey and an attic, with a one-window range. The entrance is located at the re-entrant angle and has a 20th-century ribbed door with a hood made of diagonally-set slates. The windows are late 19th or early 20th-century casements with glazing bars and painted wood lintels. On the ground floor, there are two-light windows to the right of the entrance. The wing includes a two-light window under a stone lintel with a large keyblock and a three-light window above it. The rear features two dormers with older casements. Inside, there are old moulded three-plank doors on the first floor. The cottage is said to have been a Quaker meeting house, with a burial ground located at the rear. It is included for its group value.
