Description

A row of six houses dating from 1671, with later alterations, stands on Market Square in Kineton. The houses are constructed from blue lias with ironstone dressings, and timber framing with brick infill to the rear. The roofs are of plain clay tile, with brick stacks.

The row is a single-depth range, continuous in plan with rear extensions for individual units. It is two storeys and an attic, with full gabled dormers set in groups of three, two, and one. The construction includes a slightly projecting plinth and quoins. Five entrance doors provide access, one being a single door leading to numbers 2 and 3 via an internal porch. The other doors are wider, three with ashlar surrounds featuring Tudor arches, and the remainder with flat timber lintels. The doors themselves are a mixture of four- and six-panelled flush and fielded designs. The windows are predominantly three- and four-light, stone-chamfered, recessed mullioned windows with hood moulds and small-paned glazing. Windows to number 6 and the ground floor of number 3 are two- or three-light timber casements with small panes.

The houses were built in the years including and immediately following 1671, under building leases. Between 1885 and 1905, numbers five and six were temporarily combined into a single dwelling.

The row is notable for its remarkably well-preserved continuous nature and high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The sophisticated architectural style, featuring elaborate doorways and mullioned windows with hood moulds, is striking for a relatively rural location. The buildings contribute significantly to the group value of the numerous other listed buildings around Market Square, the focal point of the settlement.
