Description

Market Cottage and Wiscombe are two houses, originally a single dwelling, built in the early to mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century rear wing and 20th-century alterations. The front of the building is roughcast, while the rear wing is brick. It has a steeply pitched roof covered with old tiles and brick edging at the eaves, with slate on the rear wing. Brick stacks are located at the ends of the building and crosswise, with a lateral stack on the rear wing. The plan is based on three units.

The exterior is two storeys plus an attic, with a three-window front. There is a top cogged brick cornice. The central left entrance now has a 20th-century door. The ground floor has two windows with three-light, small-paned casements, and a four-over-eight pane sash window to the right. The first floor has windows with three-light, small-paned casements, including one to the right with an iron opening casement. The attic has three gabled roof dormers, two of which have two-light, small-paned casements. The return on the right side has a 20th-century casement and door.

The rear wing is three storeys high and has a two-window range. It features wide eaves, overhanging verges, and mostly has two-light, small-paned casements. On the ground floor, there’s a segmental-headed window to the left of a canted bay window with a hipped roof over small-paned glazing. The first floor has segmental-headed windows. The right return of the wing displays varied fenestration and some small-paned glazing.

The interior of the houses was not inspected.
