Description

The Old Post Office is a building that has been converted from a post office to a house. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone some restoration in the 20th century. The structure is made of coursed blue lias rubble with a brick facade, set on a stone plinth, and features brick verges. It has a steeply pitched roof covered with renewed tiles, along with brick stacks at either end and a slate roof on the side wing. The building is designed in a Georgian style and follows a central staircase plan.

The exterior consists of two storeys and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. There is a plat band above the ground floor and a top moulded brick cornice. The entrance features a rubbed brick flat arch above an eared architrave and a flat canopy, leading to a six-panel door with two glazed panels. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches over renewed wooden mullioned and transomed windows, with three lights on the ground floor and two lights on the first floor.

On the right side, there are two small leaded lights above a small single-storey wing, which has a stone plinth, rebuilt brick walls, and a slate roof. The rear of the building includes a single-storey stone wing that projects to the left and has a raking buttress, as well as a shallow two-storey wing.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to have a large fireplace with a bressumer at the left end.
