Description
The Orchards is a house located in Temple Grafton, dating from the 17th to 18th century, with later alterations and a 20th-century restoration, including a wing added in 1982. The building is constructed from coursed blue lias rubble with some brick patching and features a steeply pitched old tile roof with a stone end stack.
The exterior is a single-storey plus attic structure with a three-window range. The entrance, located to the left of center, has a gabled 20th-century porch and is flanked by a 20th-century window with a stone lintel and a casement window to the left, while a segmental-headed window with a casement in a brick patch is to the right. There are two hipped dormers to the right of center with leaded casements. The right return has a large stack that originally projected, with two lights to the left and a wing to the right. The rear features two later gabled wings flanking a catslide outshut. The 20th-century wing, dated 1982, projects to the left return and includes an entrance and an adjacent loggia.
The interior is noted for having some internal timber-framed walls, one of which includes a blocked five-light mullioned window.
