Description
A 17th and early 18th century farmhouse with an attached former malthouse, significantly altered in the late 18th or early 19th century and again in the 20th century. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed blue lias rubble, with a later brick refronting. It has a steeply pitched roof covered in old tiles, with a brick stack to the front ridge, and end and lateral stacks. The malthouse has a slate roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a double-gabled wing connected to the malthouse.
The 2-storey farmhouse has a 2-window facade, with a lower 3-storey malthouse, due to a ground slope. A plat band with blue headers sits above the ground floor, and a top dentiled brick cornice runs along the top. A large stone buttress with tile offsets is present. The ground floor has a window within a lean-to projection to the left of the buttress, and a segmental-headed window to the right, both with 20th century small-paned casements. The first floor has segmental-headed windows; the one to the left is a 3-light pegged and leaded casement, and the one to the right is a 20th century small-paned casement. The lower wing to the left mirrors the details of the malthouse. A former entrance, now with a rubbed brick flat arch and stone key block over an inserted 20th century casement, is located to the right. A segmental-headed window to the left has a 3-light casement, and the window above is a leaded casement. An end stack has two diagonal shafts.
The malthouse has a blocked segmental-headed entrance and a raking buttress. Small windows with pegged casements or bars are situated at each end of each floor. The left return has similar detailing to the malthouse, with two inserted 20th century garage doors, and a 20th century lean-to outshut that continues around the rear elevation, which features projecting quoins and 20th century casements. The end of the malthouse has a round-headed entrance with a tympanum over a heavy pegged frame and plank door; a similar loading door to the first floor has a segmental head with a hoist above, a segmental-headed first-floor window, and a top 3-light window.
The interior of the farmhouse contains some chamfered beams and stone back-to-back fireplaces, with one side featuring a bressumer cut through for a larger window and an offset brick breast to the first floor. There are also some old doors, one with ventilation slots and one with HL-hinges. The roof has collar trusses with trenched principals. The malthouse includes a stone chamber extending from the ground to the attic, with a first-floor catwalk, a top gypsum floor and clasped purlins on one side of the roof. Other features include a pulley mechanism, a large timber hopper, some stud partitioning, and a doorway with curved lintels, possibly reused from a cider mill.
