Description
The stable block, located approximately 40 metres east of Walton Hall, is a Grade II listed building. It dates from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 1860s and extensive modifications in the 1980s. The structure is built of brick laid in Flemish bond and features a hipped roof covered with Welsh slate, along with ashlar cross-axial stacks. The building has an E-plan layout with cross-wings at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high and includes an 11-window range, plus two projecting hipped ends, with the right end now featuring an attached single-storey wing from the late 20th century. Notable architectural details include a brick impost band and a plat band above the ground floor, as well as a top modillioned brick cornice. The central entrance is round-headed and made of rusticated ashlar, complete with a tripartite keystone. The ground floor has round-headed entrances fitted with 20th-century glazing, while the first floor features a central Diocletian window and other windows with rubbed brick flat arches above 19th-century two-light casements with shouldered lintels. There are four stacks with offsets, and the left return has two plat bands, an inserted ground-floor window and entrance, and two first-floor windows. The rear of the building includes three gabled wings, with the central wing featuring an end stack above two lunettes and 20th-century infill between.
The interior has not been inspected. A 20th-century single-storey block connects this stable block to the east service range of Walton Hall.
