Description
The Old School is a building that was originally constructed as a school around 1860 by Sir George Gilbert Scott for Sir John Mordaunt. It is now a house. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features gabled slate roofs with truncated brick stacks.
The building is designed as a single storey with an attic and has two-storey cross-wings at each end. The exterior showcases flush bands of ashlar and brick, along with gables that are coped with ashlar. The center of the building has a roof that extends over a verandah supported by posts with cusped braces. There are two entrances under the verandah, each featuring banded segmental-pointed arches that flank two lights with ashlar lintels.
The wings of the building contain windows with stop-chamfered mullions and banded voussoirs, most of which have leaded glazing. The left wing includes a three-light window with a segmental-pointed head and a banded tympanum, as well as a similar two-light window on the first floor. The right wing has two pointed two-light windows with roundels in the tympanum, and above them is a round window with plate tracery and four roundels. A central gabled dormer features two lights beneath a lintel band and a gabled bellcote, with stacks on both the right and left wings.
The rear of the building has similar architectural details, including windows in the center with mullions and banded voussoirs, and one window in the right wing above a lean-to outshut. The left wing has a straight-headed mullioned window in the lower gabled wing, and there is a central flat-roofed two-light dormer that is likely a later addition. A small later gabled addition is present at the right end.
The Old School is part of a group of estate cottages and other buildings.
