Description

A pair of houses dating to circa 1875, designed by H Gundry for Sir Charles Mordaunt. The houses are constructed of brick and timber-frame with plastered infill, and have gabled tile roofs. A large brick cross-axial stack features fillets. The plan is irregular, with a gabled cross-wing to the left.

The exterior is two storeys and a two-window range. The cross-wing has timber-framed and jettied first floor, with a bracketed moulded fascia and a jettied gable head; barge-boards with a finial add interest, and the gable to the right is tile-hung. A six-panel door is located at the left-hand end. Windows are 3-light, transomed, and have small panes. The ground floor includes a projecting window to the left and a ground floor projecting under a lean-to roof to the right, which has a canted bay window with 1:3:1-light glazing. The first floor has a bracketed oriel to the tile-hung cross-wing and a similar oriel to the tile-hung gable to the right, with some timber-frame detail to the gablet that features barge-boards. Decorative timber-frame panels are present on the cross-wing.

The right return has a gabled projection with a jettied first floor and gable head; the entrance has a plank door flanked by tall 4-light casements. Decorative framing and a canted oriel are features of the first floor. The rear elevation has gables and includes a 20th-century single-storey addition.

The interior was not inspected.

The cottages are one of two pairs of houses situated on the road towards Moreton Morrell.
