Description
The stable block is likely contemporary with Walton Hall, dating from around 1768. It is built of dressed stone, with a stone slate roof. The building is single-storey and rectangular, featuring an open central courtyard. The north and south elevations have two tall segmental archways leading into the courtyard, each with a rebate for a door. Other doorways and windows have simple stone surrounds. Square gutter brackets are present. The roof is hipped. The east elevation has an elaborate central gabled doorway, featuring engaged Tuscan columns, a triangular pediment, and an open quatrefoil above, with a smaller circular hole at the apex of the coped gable. A later farmhouse addition to the north-east corner is not of particular architectural interest. Originally, the stable block housed up to 40 horses, used for hunting and carriages by the Waterton family who lived at Walton Hall.
