Description
Watergate near the Iron Bridge on the island at Walton Hall is a structure believed to be medieval in origin. It is constructed from roughly-dressed, well-coursed masonry that is largely covered in ivy. The gate features a central segmental archway with an inner recess for doors, leading to a flight of seven stone steps. There are flanking central turrets, one of which is said to be the site where Oliver Cromwell fired the first swivel-cannon gun in England. The entire structure is topped with a large carved wooden crucifix. This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
