Description
The grave of Charles Waterton, a renowned naturalist and explorer, dates from 1864. Originally, the grave was situated right next to the edge of the lake at Walton Hall. However, in the latter half of the 20th century, the lake was slightly reduced in size, leading to the grave now lying approximately 75 metres north-east of the south-eastern tip of the lake.
The grave features a tall Latin cross, which has been replaced with a concrete version that is weathering to resemble stone, standing on a square base. The front face of the base displays a plaque with a Latin inscription that translates to: "pray for the soul of Charles Waterton, whose wearied bones lie buried near this cross, born 1782, died 1865." The grave vault is located behind the cross and is enclosed by pyramidal stone copings topped with cast-iron railings, which were added in 1866 by Waterton's sisters-in-law and his son, Edmund Waterton.
