Description
The iron bridge across the lake to Walton Hall, dating from around 1800, is a Grade II* listed structure. This single span cast-iron bridge provides access to the island where Walton Hall is located. It features an elegant shallow arch with an open double-sectioned framework, topped with wavy and straight balusters and straight fluted rods. At each end, there are ashlar walls with piers that have channelled stonework and chamfered coping, which is topped with swept railings that have arrow-head finials on the bars. There are also pairs of gates at either end, featuring wavy dog bars with arrow-head finials. This bridge is an unusual and well-preserved example, beautifully situated, and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
