Description
This building is a threshing barn associated with Thornton Manor. It is constructed of dressed rubble, Cotswold stone, and blocks of Blue Lias, with a roof currently covered in Welsh slate. The barn has a rectangular plan and is located on the northern side of the farmstead.
The exterior features a three-bay stone barn with a brick upper level. The northern elevation retains a double-height threshing door, while the southern side shows evidence of its removal and brick infill, although the arch remains. There are also remnants of the original threshing doors, which are partially infilled. The barn's height was raised in the early 19th century, as indicated by the third storey made of darker red brick laid in English garden wall bond. The original roofline can still be seen on the western gable, which has a much steeper pitch.
Both the northern and southern elevations display diamond pattern brickwork used for ventilation in the central and western bays, along with surviving slit ventilators on either side of the midstrey, some of which are now blocked. The glazed windows are likely 20th-century insertions, as indicated by the presence of concrete lintels. On the roof, there is a small glazed lantern topped with a leaded ogee roof and a weathervane.
Inside, there is a surviving stone threshing floor at the western end of the barn. The eastern end features a timber mezzanine level that provides access to the first floor and the dovecote via a timber staircase. The ground floor includes timber partitioning at the eastern end of the first floor, believed to be early 19th century. The first floor, accessed from the mezzanine by a short timber staircase, serves as a small granary with former grain bins and is illuminated by inserted casement windows. The dovecote contains regularly spaced nest boxes, with a tile course forming the base of the boxes and providing a perch ledge.
