Description
This is an early to mid-17th century house, altered in later centuries. It is constructed of regular coursed limestone rubble with a steeply pitched red tile roof, brick ridge and end stacks (some renewed), and features a 3-unit plan. The house has two storeys plus an attic. The off-centre entrance to the right has a moulded wooden door frame and plank door, with a chamfered wood lintel. To the left of the entrance is a 3-light wooden casement window, and a smaller 20th-century window is positioned to the right. The first floor has a 3-light wooden casement window to the left and a wooden casement window with lead cames to the right. One of the first-floor windows has iron bars. All windows have wooden lintels. A 2-light and a 3-light stone mullioned window, with hood moulds and label stops, are located at the right end and facing the road. The rear elevation includes a 3-light stone-mullioned window with a cavetto section on the first floor.
Inside, the house contains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, chamfered joists, an inglenook fireplace with a bressumer and an opening for a bread oven. A wooden spiral staircase rises to the loft, alongside a straight flight of stairs with a quarter-turn. The roof features trenched purlins. The loft contains lath and plaster partitions and a cob partition. Stone flag floors are present throughout.
The property is said to have been used as a butcher’s shop in the 20th century and was once part of Halford Manor.
