Description
This listing describes a barn, stables, and farm buildings, along with an attached wall, located approximately 2 meters south of The Cedars in Priors Marston. The front range of the buildings dates back to 1690, while the barn and other structures were remodeled in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared ironstone and feature a splayed cornice. They have slate hipped roofs with brick ridge stacks and are arranged in a U-plan, with the right return side of the right wing facing the street.
The front of the building includes a cart arch in a raised section towards the right end, featuring a basket arch with a keystone. The left end has a slight projection with two 20th-century garage doors. The right range contains two windows with glazing bars and painted wood lintels. The left return side displays a datestone with the initials B.W.E.
Inside the courtyard, the wings have similar cart arches aligned on the axis. The right wing features three stable doors and three two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, all with painted wood lintels. The right part of the building, which is slightly set back, is two stories high and has a two-window range. It includes plank doors to the left and right, as well as a central plank door above ground level and a 20th-century casement to the right. The first floor has wood cross-windows.
The central range originally had an open left half, which now contains recessed 20th-century stables. It features six stable doors in a whitewashed wall, with the right half having a plank door and a pitch door. There is a segmental arch and doorway with a large wood lintel where double doors have been replaced with a stable door, boarding, and a two-light casement. There are also two stable doors on the right.
The left side of the barn has a five-bay design with wing vents in lozenge patterns and a queen strut roof. The attached garden wall has a coped top. Overall, these buildings create a cohesive and large architectural composition.
