Description
Darlingscott House is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with quoins, featuring a moulded stone eaves cornice, a moulded string course, and coped gables. The rear of the house is of squared, coursed lias. The roof is slate, with tiles to the rear, and includes stone ridge and ashlar end stacks; the stack to the left is said to incorporate a headstone. The stacks have two flues linked by a moulded cornice.
The house is two storeys plus an attic, with a five-window front. It has an L-shaped plan. A four-panelled door, slightly recessed and with a glazed overlight and margins, is set towards the centre right, within an elliptical arch doorway. The ground floor features a range of four wooden cross casement windows, and the first floor a range of five. All windows have flat arches. A stone sundial dated 1621, which has been reset, is centrally positioned on the first floor. A painted lead firemark, inscribed with the number 40743, is also on the first floor to the left. Further cross casement windows are present at the rear, one with leaded lights. Modern additions include French doors, 20th-century casements, and a single-storey brick lean-to.
Inside, the entrance lobby and passage are floored with stone slabs. The ground and first floors retain chamfered spine beams. One open fireplace remains, with a chamfered timber bressumer; the other has been removed. A timber and plaster partition separates the main range from the rear wing. Original purlins are still visible.
