Description

Sundial Cottage is a house, likely dating from 1681, though it reflects two phases of construction. It is built of squared, coursed lias rubble with ashlar quoins, featuring mullioned windows and a stone-coped gable to the right. The roof is stone slate with a rendered ridge stack and limestone and brick external stacks to the rear. The house follows a four-unit, lobby-entry plan, with two storeys and an attic, presenting a four-window front. A 20th-century door sits centrally, protected by a 20th-century wood porch, above an old wood lintel. Flanking the door are 4-light stone mullioned windows with double-chamfered surrounds, the central mullion also double-chamfered. Ground and first-floor windows to the left and right are 2-light mullioned windows with double-chamfered surrounds. Above, at the centre left and centre right, are 3-light mullioned windows with double-chamfered surrounds. All windows are hooded, with label stops. The window to the first floor centre right retains original leaded lights; one is inscribed "16?3", and the central light features an old iron casement. A 20th-century hipped dormer is visible. Set into the left wall is a sundial dated 1681. A 20th-century one-storey range extends to the rear. Inside, the cottage features two open fireplaces with bread ovens, one of which is blocked. There are timber bressumers with ogee stops, and chamfered spine beams with ogee stops to both the ground and first floors. Original plank doors remain, alongside plank and moulded muntin partitions. A further fireplace is located on the first floor, with a timber bressumer and stepped stop. The lobby has stone flags. Some roof timbers have been replaced.
