Description
Stafford House is a house dating from the early 18th century, located in Chippenham. It is constructed of painted limestone ashlar and features a steeply-pitched hipped stone slate roof, with a moulded cornice above a lateral ashlar stack on the main block. The building has a double-depth plan that sharply cants back to the right, with a rear block that is likely a later addition.
The exterior consists of three storeys and presents a symmetrical five-window range, with narrow windows on the canted right return. The second floor has 19th-century six-over-six-pane sash windows, while the first floor features six-over-one-pane sashes, with the central windows being blind. There is a returned moulded eaves cornice supported by wrought-iron brackets for the gutter, and continuous sill bands on the upper floors. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. At the rear, there are paired ogee-moulded stone-mullioned windows.
Inside, the house contains 18th-century panelled doors, a 19th-century quarter-turn staircase with winders, and an 18th-century two-bay roof with butt purlins and a hip on the left-hand bay.
