Description
This property comprises a house and shop, now a house and two shops, located on the north side of Market Place in Chippenham. It dates to the mid-19th century, with a stated date of 1889. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped pantile roof and brick stacks to the rear. It follows a double-depth plan.
The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window arrangement for each unit. A continuous cornice and blocking course runs along the top, with pilasters defining the quoins and party wall. There's a platband below the second floor and a string course below the first floor. Bracketed sills support the windows, which are plate-glass sash windows with 2/2-panes to the second floor, margin-paned plate-glass sashes to the first floor, and plate-glass sashes to the centre of the ground floor.
Number 62, originally a house and wider than Number 63, features semicircular-arched openings. The 20th-century entrance door has two margin panes in its fanlight. A 20th-century shop front has been inserted to the right of the door. Number 63, always a shop, has recessed panels to pilasters flanking the door and shop front, which support a plain fascia. A plaque above the second-floor windows reads “AD 1889,” situated above a semicircular-arched window similar to that of Number 62.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
