Description

Menagerie farmbuildings, built around 1778, are located to the northwest of The Woodlands. They were constructed to serve the Menagerie designed by Lancelot (Capability) Brown. The buildings are made of red brick and have plain tile roofs. There are two one-plan ranges connected by a gate.

The larger northern range features a two-storey wing to the west, which has four segment-headed carriage arches, with the rightmost arch containing double plank doors. To the right of these arches is a stable door flanked by single two-light glazing bar casements, all with segment heads. Above, there are three tall two-light glazing bar casements at the eaves. Further to the right, there is a slightly set-back lower range with a single stable door. This range continues at a right angle, featuring another stable door and becomes single-storey with two stable doors and a shuttered opening in between.

The smaller southern range is single-storey and includes two cart entrances leading to the northern range, as well as two bricked-up cart shed entrances on the southern range, one of which has a three-light glazing bar casement. Beyond this, there is a single plank door flanked by single-light glazing bar casements. These buildings are extremely rare, as they were built to store food and bedding for the animals in the Menagerie and also provided sheltered winter accommodation for these exotic beasts.
