Description

The farmyard to the north of The Firs consists of a barn, cowsheds, stables, and a pigeoncote, dating from around 1820. It is built from coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and features slate roofs. The barn, which is very large, has an off-centre doorway with double doors that have a segment brick head and an ashlar keystone. To the left of the doorway are four brick arches with brick piers between and segment brick arches. To the right, there is a smaller barn door with double doors, and beyond that, three brick arches with brick piers between and segment brick arches, which are now partially blocked, each containing a 3-light 20th-century window. Above, there are three central hayloft openings under segment brick heads with plank doors. To the left, there are four 2-light sliding sash windows under segment brick heads, and to the right, there are four similar openings, with the first three having plank doors and the last featuring a glazing bar casement.

To the south of the barn are three lower ranges, with three crewyards between them, linked to the south by walls and gates. The east stable range has alternating stable doors and shuttered windows. The central range of cowsheds includes a tall pigeoncote at the south end, which has three tall round-headed openings with brick surrounds on its south side. This pigeoncote is topped with a hipped roof that has a square lantern above, featuring pigeon holes and flight perches, and is surmounted by a pyramidal roof with an iron weather-vane. The south wall on either side has twelve brick-arched pig feeding troughs. The west range contains cowsheds.
