Description
The war memorial in the churchyard of Holy Cross Church in Scopwick was erected in 1894. It is made of carved marble and features a decorated circular Celtic wheel cross on a tapering plinth with two steps. The memorial is situated in a small elevated flower bed. The side of the plinth facing Main Street is inscribed with the words "TO THE GLORY/AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/OF SCOPWICK WHO FELL IN THE/GREAT WAR 1914-1918/THEIR NAMES LIVETH EVERMORE," while the step below bears the inscription "1939-1945/ROBERT P. BAUMBER."
Although the exact date of its erection is unknown, the memorial was originally dedicated to the men of the parish who died in the First World War and later also commemorates a single serviceman who died in the Second World War. War memorials hold significant historical and cultural value at both local and national levels, and this memorial is a notable example of such commemorations, reflecting the sacrifices made during both world wars. It also has group value with the Church of the Holy Cross.
