Description

South Farmhouse is a farmhouse located in Arbury Park, with a cross-wing that likely dates from the 17th century and a main range from the 18th century, altered in the mid-19th century. The exterior features colourwashed pebbledash, possibly over some timber framing, and has plain-tile roofs with brick ridge stacks. The building has a T-plan layout, with the cross-wing on the right side.

The main range is symmetrical, two-storey, and has three windows. It includes a 19th-century four-panelled door with arched upper panels and an overlight with glazing bars. Above the door is a stone panel inscribed with "GEORGE ELIOT BORN HERE NOVEMBER 22 1819." The windows throughout are three-light and a central two-light casement, with glazing bars; the first-floor windows are from the 19th or 20th century. The cross-wing has a bay window with a 20th-century casement and a plain-tile hipped roof, along with a three-light casement above it. At the rear, the cross-wing features an old lead-latticed wood cross window.

Inside, the farmhouse has back-to-back open fireplaces, and the bressumers and ceiling beams display run-out mouldings. The building holds Grade One status due to its historical associations.
