Description

Arbury Mill is a watermill dating from the mid to late 18th century. It was raised, altered, and extended in the mid 19th century, which included bringing the wheel under cover. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and English bond brick, with the later extensions in a different colour of Flemish bond brick. It features a plain-tile roof and has two storeys with an irregular three-window range. The left side of the mill is made of brick, with a narrow opening for the mill wheel. There is a low opening, likely once for the mill race, which has been blocked with 19th-century bricks. Most of the openings have brick segmental arches, while one window above has a timber lintel. A large blocked round arch opening has had a door inserted, and the first floor includes a three-light casement window with a horizontal glazing bar just above the arch, along with a plank door. The former cross gable is visible in the brickwork, and the lower right part retains this feature. The building shows remnants of render and has a doorway and small opening, with a three-light casement above. The roof has collapsed, and the rear side, facing the mill house (which is not included in the listing), is of one storey due to the fall of the site. The left range has a doorway and window, while the right range retains a former cross gable of rubble and has a 20th-century door. Inside, there is a large timber undershot wheel, and the lower range has a brick vaulted ground floor. The mill is now disused and was entirely fed by the canal. It is believed by some to have inspired George Eliot's 'The Mill on the Floss'.
