Description

The gatehouse and attached kitchen courtyard walls at Arbury Hall, believed to be from 1754, are constructed of sandstone ashlar with an old plain-tile roof that is concealed by gable parapets. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the gatehouse features four-centred arched openings and embattled square angle turrets adorned with a moulded string course, niches above, and a cornice decorated with fleur-de-lys. The large moulded and chamfered gateway includes ribbed double doors, and hood moulds are present throughout the structure. The embattled moulded gable displays a shield of arms and a cross finial. The elevation facing the stable yard is simpler, featuring a chamfered arch, a plain gable, and a shield of arms. Inside, the gatehouse has a plaster vaulted ceiling. The kitchen courtyard walls, primarily from the early 19th century, are made of Flemish bond brick with stone coping and stand approximately 3 metres high. The south screen wall is faced with sandstone ashlar in the Gothic Revival style and consists of three bays with hollow-chamfered four-centred arched openings. The third bay includes a doorway with a sash door, while the windows feature Y-tracery. A Jacobean openwork stone balustrade, re-used from another location in the garden, crowns the structure.
