Description

Sutton House is a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, with additions from the 17th and early 19th centuries. The original timber frame has largely been replaced with coursed dressed and squared stone, with slate and tile roofs. It has verge parapets and brick ridge stacks against cross wings, along with end stacks. The house is irregularly shaped, with a larger section to the south.

The front of the house features two gables flanking a recessed central area. The left-hand gable is a stone facing of what was originally a timber frame. It has two storeys and an attic with a steeply pitched roof, and a range of three-light, chamfered mullioned windows – progressively taller on the ground floor. This wing is a full-length replica from the 19th century. The right-hand wing is a complete rebuild from the early 19th century, with a low-pitched gable and a range of two-paned sash windows. The recessed central section is built of larger coursed stone with a slate roof and features windows on the right side. A four-light block mullioned casement is above a three-sided bay with sash windows. A boarded door sits under a 17th-century lintel, set against the return angle of the left-hand wing. The south side of the south wing has a timber frame on a plinth, with a deep plinth and single bressumer to tall uprights. The north wing has a symmetrical front from the early 19th century, featuring three two-paned sash windows.
