Description

This is a milepost dated 1834, located on Ashbourne Road in Leek. It is made of cast iron and features a drum-shaped top supported by a cylindrical shaft. The top is divided into panels by raised ribs, with raised lettering indicating distances: 'Leek 1 mile Ashbourne 14 miles' on the top panels, and 'London 163 miles' on the shaft. The domed cap includes the name of the foundry, 'James Bassett Ashbourne', along with the date of manufacture, '1834'.
