Description
London Mill is a former silk mill, built in 1853. It is constructed of brick and has a slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall and features a 19-window range, arranged as 8-3-8, with a prominent central bay that has a pediment and is accentuated by stone quoins. A clock is positioned at the apex of the pediment, with the date displayed on either side. The central doorway is set within a shallow pedimented architrave that includes acroteria. The windows are made of iron and have 20 panes, some of which include central opening lights, and are topped with flat-arched stone heads and stone cills. The eaves overhang, and there are some renewed or inserted loading doors on the right-hand gable return. The building also features cast-iron fire escape stairs and doors located in the upper right-hand bay and the lower gable return, which are likely later 19th-century additions. Inside, the first floor is notably high, possibly designed to accommodate Jacquard looms. The interior includes cast-iron columns that support a single longitudinal beam. There is a truncated chimney at the rear, also dated 1853, along with engine and boiler houses, but the power transmission system is largely secondary, showing only slight evidence of the original setup.
