Description

33 and 35 Bath Street are a pair of houses dated 1880, designed by William Larner Sugden. They are built of brick with a plain-tiled roof and some terracotta decorations, showcasing the Queen Anne style. The houses rise three storeys and feature a three-window range with paired central entrances and advanced outer gables. The entrances are accessed by steps, with a retaining wall below that is embellished with heavy terracotta rosettes. Each entrance has a paired round-arched design leading to recessed porches, which include a single squat stone central shaft. The doors are panelled and part-glazed. Above the entrance arches, there is a moulded brick panel that serves as an apron for a single central window. Terracotta low-relief panels on either side incorporate the initials SR. A single dormer window is present in the roof above, featuring a date in the pediment over the central light. The flanking gables have bay windows on the ground floor, created by paired 8-pane sash windows with curved windows at the angles of the advanced gables; the inner windows lead to recessed porches, with No. 35 lacking an outer window. On the first floor, there are paired 8-pane sash windows with curved projecting aprons and shallow curved pedimented heads. Each gable apex has a 6-pane sash window in the attic. The return elevation facing Ford Street includes paired sash windows in the gable, with shallow brick aprons and heads. The houses also feature end wall stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
