Description
These are former silk weavers' cottages located at the rear of numbers 53 and 55 on Derby Street in Leek. They date from the late 18th century or early 19th century and are currently derelict. The cottages feature Flemish bond brickwork with blue headers, but the roof covering is missing.
The exterior shows three storeys at the front and two storeys at the rear, with a three-window range that includes three cottages. Each cottage has a single-room plan, with doorways located to the left of the two left-hand cottages and to the right of the right-hand cottage. The windows and doors on each floor have cambered brick heads, while the ground and first-floor windows are boarded over. There are also two attic windows and dentilled eaves, along with end wall stacks.
The interior has not been inspected. These cottages are part of a notably complete backplot development that reflects the early urban growth associated with industrialisation. They are grouped with the adjacent northern terraced cottage row.
