Description
The war memorial is a clock tower built from Portland stone and features ashlar channeling on the lower stage. Constructed between 1924 and 1925 and restored in 1994, it was designed by Percy Worthington. The tower has a door and inscribed bronze panels set in advanced moulded architraves on each face. The upper stage includes glazed doors with balconettes and paired round-arched windows, with a clock surrounded by a laurel wreath. The names of World War I battles are inscribed on a frieze below the pyramidal stone roof.
The tower is elevated on steps, with a flanking wall that has cast-iron or bronze gates and lamp standards at the corners. Memorial panels for World War II are located on the flanking wall. This war memorial was a gift to the town from Sir Arthur Nicholson, a local silk manufacturer, and his wife, in memory of their son, Lieutenant Basil Lee Nicholson, and other local men who lost their lives in World War I.
