Description
Pickwood Hall is a house built around 1840, incorporating elements of an earlier building, with extensions and interior remodeling completed in the 1890s. The architect for the extensions and possibly the remodeling was William Larner Sugden in 1896. The structure features well coursed and squared rubble with slate roofs, and some brick in the rear wing.
The exterior consists of a two-storey main block with a three-window range, accompanied by a three-storey rear wing that may include parts of the earlier building. This rear wing has been extended by another wing built into the earth bank and features an Italianate tower at the junction with the main house. A right-angled rear range was added in 1896, also three storeys high. The central doorway is set within a Tuscan portico porch and is flanked by canted bay windows, which were possibly added between 1860 and 1870. Above, there are 16-pane sash windows, and the building has plain overhanging eaves.
Inside, the layout largely reflects the remodeling from the late 19th century, featuring a staircase, several fireplaces (one of which incorporates tiles by William de Morgan), and a stained glass window on the stairs that appears to date from this period.
