Description
The Steppes is a cottage located on Main Road in Betley, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed, with some sections replaced by painted brick, and features a plain tile roof with a brick ridge stack. It has a two-cell layout and stands one storey high with an attic. The original timber wall plate can still be seen above the later brick front. The cottage has two windows on the front, featuring casements with segmental heads on the ground floor and gabled dormers in the attic. There is a central door with a segmental head. Inside, there is an exposed collar and tie beam roof truss on the right gable, supported by vertical struts below the collar and V-struts above. The left gable has a similar roof truss and exposed wall framing with three tiers of square panels. The interior also features a chamfered and stopped ceiling.
