Description
The Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located in Bowsey Wood, Madeley, with later additions and alterations. It is partly timber framed and has painted brick infill and cladding, topped by a pantile roof with a brick ridge and end stacks. Originally likely consisting of two rooms, the cottage was extended to the east in the mid-20th century and has a 20th-century brick lean-to added to the north. The cottage is one storey high with an attic lit by dormers in the roof.
The timber framing is visible and consists of square panels; three panels run from the cill to the wall plate on the north side, while two rectangular panels are on the south. Short tension braces are also present. The windows are 20th-century casements, and a mid-20th-century gabled porch sits against the west gable end. The west gable end displays V-struts to the collar, which are characteristic of 17th-century roof construction.
Inside, the timber frame is exposed at the west end, and a heavy cross beam with chamfered stops is visible in the room to the east of the fireplace.
