Description
This is a canal milepost dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets below, indicating "Shardlow 19 miles" and "Preston Brook 73 miles." It was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal, where this milepost is located, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
