Description
This is a canal milepost located off the A38 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 21 miles" and "Preston Brook 71 miles." It was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
