Description
This is a canal milepost located to the north of the Canal and River Trust offices at Red Bull Wharf, dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. The milepost is made of cast iron and painted black and white. It features a circular shape with a moulded head and has embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 63 miles" and "Preston Brook 29 miles." It was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal, for which this milepost serves as a marker, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
