Description
The canal milepost located off Shobnall Street is dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. It is made of cast iron and painted black and white. The post is circular with a moulded head and features embossed letters on two convex tablets below, indicating distances: "Shardlow 16 miles" and "Preston Book 76 miles." This milepost was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal, for which this milepost serves as a marker, was constructed between 1766 and 1770 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
