Description
This is a canal milepost located north of Hoomill Lock on the Trent and Mersey Canal, dated "R & D Stone 1819" on its shaft. The milepost is made of cast iron and is painted black and white. It features a circular post with a moulded head and embossed letters on two convex tablets that read: "Shardlow 39 miles" and "Preston Brook 53 miles." It was likely cast in the foundry of Rangeley and Dixon in Lichfield Street, Stone. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by engineers James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
