Description

Hoomill Bridge Number 76 is a canal road bridge located on Hoomill Lane, built around 1766-72 by James Brindley, the Surveyor General. The bridge is constructed of red brick with stone coping and quoins. It features a single span with a humped back and includes a towpath. The bridge is integrated with the adjoining lock and has a segmental headed arch. The swept wings of the bridge terminate in piers at all four corners. There are stone plaques at the crown on both sides, and a cast iron guard plate is present on the north towpath side jamb. Minor repairs have been made, including the replacement of the top course of bricks. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
