Description
This building, located at 15 and 17 Bellstone and 3 and 4 Claremont Hill in Shrewsbury, is a block of three dwellings that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of brick with a hipped plain tiled roof. The structure stands three storeys high and features a five-window range. The ground floor has an inserted shop front, while the upper floors are adorned with twelve-pane sash windows that have stepped stuccoed voussoirs. The roof includes three pedimented dormers, with the central one being segmentally arched.
The return elevation facing Claremont Hill was originally two separate dwellings, known as Nos. 3 and 4 Claremont Hill. No. 3 is also from the early 18th century and consists of two storeys with a six-window range. It has inserted shop fronts on either side of a six-panelled doorway set within an architrave that features console brackets supporting an open pediment. The upper windows are twelve-pane sashes with stepped stuccoed voussoirs, and there is a moulded modillion eaves cornice along with two gabled dormers in the roof.
No. 4 Claremont Hill, which adjoins on the right, is likely from the late 18th century. This part of the building is three storeys high with a two-window range. It has a blocked central doorway within a pedimented case, flanked by sixteen-pane sash windows on each floor, all featuring stepped stuccoed voussoir heads, and twelve-pane sash windows in the attic storey. The eaves are dentilled. Nos. 3 and 4 Claremont Hill were listed on January 10, 1953.
