Description
Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Dogpole, which includes No. 9 Wyle Cop, is a row of three shops with flats above, primarily dating from the mid-19th century but incorporating elements from an earlier building. The structure is built of brick with stone dressings and features a plain tiled roof. It stands three storeys high and has a nine-window range, including one blind window. The windows are arranged irregularly and consist of paired two-pane sash windows with stilted or two-centred stone lintels, some of which have trefoiled lights in the tympanum. To the right, there are two inserted shop fronts, and in the centre, there is a two-centred archway with a door that is recessed and accessed by a flight of steps.
The lower section of the building is a separate construction and is likely somewhat older. Although its fenestration is similar, it has a series of blocked windows that do not align closely with the current floor levels, and its redder brickwork and sill band suggest an 18th-century origin. No. 9 Wyle Cop forms the gable of this range and is four storeys high with a two-window range. It features an early 20th-century shop front and paired two-pane sashes above, with truncated trefoiled heads on the first floor. The attic has a three-light mullioned window with a high relieving arch above it. The gable is stone-coped, with kneelers and a finial. This group of buildings is included for its group value, as it is part of an outstanding collection.
