Description

21 and 21A Dogpole are a pair of houses, likely built as one, with a mid-19th century facade that conceals an early 18th century structure. The buildings are made of brick and topped with Welsh slate roofs. The street front features two storeys and a partial attic storey, clearly divided into two buildings, although they may have been constructed in a single phase.

No. 21 has a five-window range that forms three bays, with a raised central section. The doorway is located to the right of the centre and features an architrave with Corinthian pilasters, a pediment, and panelled rebates. The flanking windows are sash windows with two upper panes. The upper windows are similar, but those in the central section are highlighted with stuccoed architraves and have a cast-iron balcony above the upper window. There is a lower window situated above the doorway, and an inserted garage entry is found in the left-hand section. The building has a stuccoed cornice and a parapet at the eaves.

No. 21A has a three-window range with rusticated stucco on the ground floor, and four-pane sash windows with stuccoed heads featuring voussoirs on each floor. The doorway is in a moulded architrave located in the side elevation leading to a passage. It also has a modillion eaves cornice and three pedimented dormers in the roof, which are linked by cast-iron railings with a rosette pattern. The gables are coped, and the roof has a slight mansard profile.

The rear range of the building dates back to the early 18th century and consists of three storeys with a five-window range. It features 12-pane sash windows with flat-arched gauged brick heads and an enriched lead rainwater head.
