Description
A pair of attached houses, dating to the late 18th century, with an addition constructed around 1800. The houses are built of brick, with a low-pitched roof that is not visible. They have three storeys over a basement, and an eight-window facade with alternately advanced and recessed bays, each containing two windows. The doorways are located in the outer recessed bays and feature six-panelled doors with fanlights, supported by clustered shafts to the architraves, with a hood carried on scrolled console brackets. The windows are 12-pane sashes (some with 2 panes), set within flat-arched heads with keystones. A parapet eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and gable end stacks are present.
Cast-iron railings with spearhead and urn finials surround the basement area. To the left, a later addition (around 1800) incorporates two bays featuring three blind, painted windows above a stuccoed basement, with overhanging eaves supported by a modillion cornice. The elevation facing the park forms part of this addition, which is two storeys high with four bays. It features 15-pane sash windows on the ground floor and a large, channelled ashlar bow window to the right, with 15-pane sash windows arranged along the curve, framed by Ionic pilasters. A further cast-iron openwork railing sits above. An axial stack is also present.
The rear elevation, facing the garden, features a similar stone bow window in the 1800s addition.
Inside No.5, the original staircase retains turned balusters and moulded tread ends, while the entrance hall is adorned with Rococo plaster panelling.
