Description
This is a pair of attached houses located at 3-5 St Cross Road, dating from the early 19th century. The houses are constructed of painted brick, with a slate roof featuring gabled ends and a front parapet. Brick gable-end stacks are also present.
The houses have mirror-image plans. The west front is symmetrical, with four bays and a parapet featuring a moulded cornice that projects forward over pilasters. A moulded string course runs at the level of the first-floor window sills, and there is a plinth at ground level. The windows are 12-pane sashes, set within flat brick arches. The upper two windows on the first floor have louvred shutters. A pair of double-recessed round-arch doorways are centrally located, each featuring a semi-circular fanlight and panelled doors; the left door has a circular central panel.
The rear elevation has a round-arched stair window at the centre, and this window contains later 19th-century stained glass. There is a 12-pane sash window and a later bay window on the right-hand side, and a later extension on the left.
The interior retains early 19th-century joinery, including a staircase with stick balusters, slender column newels, and a moulded mahogany handrail. A reeded chimney-piece with paterae, a similarly detailed cupboard, and panelled doors are also noteworthy elements. There are moulded plaster ceiling cornices throughout. This pair of houses represents a good example of early 19th-century domestic architecture.
