Description
26 and 27 St Swithun Street is a Grade II* listed building dating from the mid-17th century. It is two storeys high with an attic and basement, featuring projecting three-storey wings. Originally a single house, it was divided in the 18th century, and a new doorcase was added. The building has red brick walls and a moulded eaves cornice that bows over a central round-headed window on the first floor. The roof is covered with old tiles and includes three hipped dormers. The first floor has five windows, while the ground floor has two windows and two doors, along with a central late 19th-century rectangular bay. The doorcases are adorned with engaged Doric columns, an entablature, and an open moulded pediment. A string course runs along the first floor, and the original sash windows feature glazing bars and segmental keystone heads. The entrance includes a six-panel door with an interlaced fanlight. It is said that James II occupied this house when he was the Duke of York. This building serves as the south terminal feature of St. Thomas Street.
