Description
Moat Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century or 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features painted brick and uncoursed rubble that partly replaces and conceals the original timber frame, topped with a slate and concrete tile roof. It is designed in an L-shape, with a lower 19th-century rubblestone addition to the northwest and brick lean-tos on the southwest side. The farmhouse has two storeys and a gable-lit attic.
The framing is partially exposed on the back wall of the northeast range, showing fragmentary rectangular panels with herringbone struts. The late 19th-century windows are primarily cast-iron casements, with two located below the eaves and one to the left of the door leading to the northeast range. The ground-floor openings have segmental heads, and there are similar blocked openings on the left side of the southeast range and the gable end of the northeast range. The entrance features a four-panel door with a rectangular barred overlight.
A prominent reddish-brown brick axial ridge stack is located on the northeast range near the junction with the southeast range, along with an external brick end stack on the southeast range. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Additionally, there are traces of a partly infilled moat to the northeast and southeast of the farmhouse.
